Gian-Paul Vidal, MD, FACS
American Board of Surgery Certified
Dr. Gian-Paul Vidal was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey. He grew up with two brothers, and his parents were first generation immigrants from Colombia.
Dr. Vidal first became interested in medicine at the age of thirteen when his father passed away from colon cancer. With that goal in mind, he graduated cum laude from Rutgers University in New Jersey with a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and a minor in Sociology. He then began his study of medicine at Rutgers – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) at Rutgers University. After receiving his medical degree, he stayed true to his Jersey Boy roots and began his surgical training at his RWJMS.
During his training, he had wide experience in all aspects of general surgery. He also spent two years doing basic science research in melanoma. He served as the residency program’s first Ombudsman and was the Education Chief during his final year. He also authored a book chapter focusing on the gallbladder and delivered presentations at local and national conferences.
Dr. Vidal’s interest is in acute care surgery such as gallbladder attacks, appendicitis, hernias, and intestinal obstructions and perforations. When possible, he likes to perform operations either laparoscopically or robotically. Robotic surgery allows for less postoperative pain, reduced hospital stays, and a quicker recovery. It also provides many benefits that allow for a smoother, safer operation. Dr. Vidal likes to focus on minimally invasive repairs of inguinal, umbilical, and ventral hernias. He also enjoys removing various lumps and bumps such as lipomas and cysts.
Originally, Dr. Vidal was interested in pediatrics but after rotating through surgery, he knew he belonged in the operating room. He loved the immediacy of surgery and being able to take care of patients quickly using his hands. After fifteen years of education and training at Rutgers, he finally left the great state of New Jersey to live in the DMV area with his wife, a colorectal surgeon.
During his free time, he likes to read fantasy novels, listen to autobiographies, write poetry and short fiction, play video games, DJ, and go dancing and traveling with his wife.
